PS Omollo: We must commit to end violence against women

The Principal Secretary of State Department for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo has on Tuesday 30th January 2024 held a meeting to discuss the rising cases of femicide in the country.

In attendance were Principal Secretary for State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action, Anne Wangombe and Higher Education and Research, Ministry of Kenya Betty Muganda.

The agenda of the meeting was to discuss the concerns about femicide in the country and lawful ways of protecting women against possible predators.

Omollo said that violence against women is an everyday reality which the government must commit to end.

“The rising cases of abuse of women is an appalling human rights violation and criminal act that we must commit to end,” he added.

End Femicide march that took place on Saturday

The meeting comes days after women across the country led protests to demonstrate against the recent killings of women in the country.

The protests took place in a number of cities and towns in the country.

Thousands of women took to the streets carrying placards, blocking streets and calling on the government to intervene and help stop the ongoing killings of women.

According to reports, approximately sixteen women have been killed in one month.

On Monday 29th January 2024, a man allegedly stabbed his twenty-year-old girlfriend to death during a fight in Biafra slums in Nairobi County.

The suspect, who is known by the family fled the scene moments after he allegedly committed the crime.

However, the motive for the killing is still unknown while police are still in search of the suspect.
