Public outcry over abduction of anti-Finance Bill protests activist Shad Khalif

Shadrack Kiprono commonly known as Shad Khalif, a vocal critic of the proposed Finance Bill, has gone missing following his abduction from a shopping center in South B, Nairobi.

Shad, an outspoken opponent of the Finance Bill 2024, was abducted on Sunday June 23, 2024 evening.

His disappearance marks the latest in a series of kidnappings targeting critics of the proposed taxes.

According to his family and friends, he was abducted by unknown individuals who had followed him to the area.

On Sunday evening in South B, Nairobi, Shad Khalif was forcibly abducted by men in a black double-cab pickup and a white Toyota Prado.

The abductors, suspected to be plainclothes police officers, targeted Khalif due to his prominent role in the ‘occupy parliament’ and ‘reject Finance Bill’ protests in Nairobi.

This comes shortly after Khalif conducted interviews explaining his involvement in the protests, emphasizing that the movement is organic and has no financier or leader.

The abduction was captured in a video circulating on social media, showing how three individuals apprehended him and forcibly put him in a vehicle.

They then drove away, leaving the bystanders at the restaurant confused. The vehicle had been parked in the establishment’s parking lot.

Meanwhile, police have declined to respond to inquiries about his abduction. His kidnapping occurred just hours after another protester, Dr. Austin Omondi, was abducted and later released on Sunday evening.

In addition, before Khalif’s abduction, Leslie, the son of Attorney General Justine Muturi, was also kidnapped and later released.

Officials report that Leslie, 40, was detained and questioned for hours at the ATPU offices in Upper Hill before being released on Sunday, June, 23, around 6:30 pm.

Abduction of Leslie was disclosed by Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje, who explained who explained in a video that Leslie was abducted by police on June 22.

However, the exact motive of these abductions remains unclear although they appear to be linked to the reject Finance Bill protests in the country.
