Public participation kicks off as Mt Kenya MPs make U-turn on Gachagua impeachment

Several MPs from Nyeri who initially supported the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have withdrawn their backing, citing a change in perspective after further reflection and consultation with their constituents.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, October 3, Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto, Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina, Nyeri Woman Representative Rahab Mukami, and Embu Woman Representative Pamela Njoki revealed that they no longer support the motion to oust Gachagua. The lawmakers admitted their initial support was premature, as they hadn’t thoroughly examined the charges against the Deputy President.

“We made a rushed decision, not based on facts,” Wandeto said.

The MPs explained that after listening to their constituents and engaging in a period of introspection, they have chosen to vote against the motion.

“I have read through the charges and realized this is something the Deputy President and the President can resolve between themselves. Kenya is bigger than all of us,” Mukami said.

She emphasized that the people of Nyeri are against Gachagua’s removal, adding, “they do not want the Deputy President to be impeached.”

Wandeto echoed this sentiment, saying, “as elected representatives, it is our duty to listen to the people. I will be voting no on Tuesday in line with their wishes.”

The MPs had initially appended their signatures to the impeachment motion, spearheaded by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, which has the backing of 291 lawmakers well above the one-third threshold needed to begin the process. Gachagua faces 11 charges, including gross misconduct, misuse of office, and violation of the constitution through actions endangering national unity.

Despite the widespread support for the motion, the Nyeri MPs now believe that Gachagua and President William Ruto should focus on resolving their differences and prioritizing development.

Their withdrawal came hours before the the kick off of public participation exercise across the country on Friday, October 4. The exercise, as enshrined in the Constitution, is meant to collect the views of Kenyans on the impeachment motion of DP Gachagua.
