Questions as DCI officers arrest man nursing gunshot wounds at Mama Lucy Hospital

A family in Dandora, Nairobi County is distressed over their kin’s arrest by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers without any explanations.

It appears that a scuffle between their kin Samuel Kiratu and a man claiming to be a police officer the previous week was the point of concern.

Kiratu was allegedly ambushed by an unknown man on Saturday the previous week who reportedly assaulted him. In self defence, Kiratu allegedly fought him off.

A crowd of people quickly gathered in efforts to de-escalate the situation when the unknown man reportedly announced he was a police officer and pulled out his gun shooting Kiratu in the hip.

Well wishers rushed him to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital where he was due to undergo surgery on Wednesday this week. The surgery was mysteriously cancelled moments before Kiratu was taken to theatre.

“We contacted the person who was looking after him overnight and we were told that medics had brought him his theatre gown and unique theatre identification number.

“Moments later the same person called back saying the surgery had been cancelled without any explanation,” Kiratu’s sister Cecilia Gishimo narrated.

DCI officers took away the man from the male hospital ward in a wheelchair.

His family watched helplessly as the detectives helped Kiratu into a blue Subaru outback vehicle parked outside the hospital’s main entrance before speeding off, leaving them in shock and desperation.

Upon enquiry, the hospital’s administration offered a less than satisfactory response to them, sparking outrage and frustration.

“We do not have a problem with him being arrested because if he is in the wrong he should answer before court, but they could have waited until he underwent surgery and recovered before arresting him,” Kiratu’s sister Cecilia Gishimo added.

His family described him as a well-mannered who would never break the law. They blamed the hospital for releasing the patient before treatment.
