The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has elected a new leader, Rafael Louzán, who secured 90 votes in the elections. His only competitor, Salvador Gomá, received 43 votes.
The 57-year-old Louzán steps into the role following the controversial exit of former president Luis Rubiales, who resigned after forcibly kissing star player Jenni Hermoso during Spain’s FIFA Women’s World Cup celebrations.
However, Louzán’s leadership could face challenges. Details have emerged that Louzán was convicted for abuse of office in 2014 during his tenure as president of the Pontevedra Provincial Council.
He was handed a seven-year suspension from holding public office, raising concerns that he may not complete his term, which runs until 2028. If upheld, this conviction could force him out of his current position.
The RFEF has struggled with leadership scandals for some time. Rubiales, who denies wrongdoing, stepped down in 2023 amid widespread public outrage.
He is set to stand trial in February 2025, with prosecutors seeking a 2.5-year prison sentence for charges of sexual assault and coercion.
Adding to the turmoil, Rubiales’ interim successor Pedro Rocha was suspended in July for exceeding his authority. Rocha, who was handpicked by Rubiales, faces a two-year suspension.
Both Rubiales and Rocha are also under investigation as part of a separate corruption probe launched in April 2024.
Despite the ongoing leadership chaos, Spain’s national teams continue to excel on the pitch.
The men’s team triumphed at Euro 2024 and will aim for another title in the 2025 UEFA Nations League.
The women’s team are preparing for the 2025 European Championship, where they will compete in Group B against Italy, Belgium, and Portugal.
The RFEF’s off-field struggles remain a stark contrast to the on-field success of its national teams.
