Rai Derby Showdown: Kabras Sugar and Menengai Oilers set for electrifying Kenya Cup final

The Kakamega ASK Showground is set to ignite on Saturday, April 12, 2025, as Kabras Sugar RFC and Menengai Oilers clash in the highly anticipated Kenya Cup final. Dubbed the “Rai Derby,” this showdown promises to be an electrifying conclusion to a season defined by high-octane action and unforgettable moments.

Kabras Sugar, aiming to defend their title, have enjoyed another dominant campaign, finishing the regular season unbeaten with 52 points. Their remarkable consistency has seen them go 39 consecutive Kenya Cup matches without a loss since February 2022. They secured their spot in the final with a commanding 45-6 victory over Nondescripts RFC in the semi-finals.

“We’ve had a strong season, and we’re proud of the consistency the team has shown,” said Kabras Sugar Head Coach Carlos Katywa. “Preparations for the final have been going well, and the boys are focused and ready. We respect Menengai Oilers; they’ve been outstanding this season. Expect a physical, tactical, and passionate battle.”

Menengai Oilers, however, have proven their grit and brilliance throughout the season. After a dominant 76-13 victory over Kisumu RFC and a third-place finish in the regular season with 47 points, they battled past KU Blak Blad in the playoffs. They then stunned KCB RFC with a 31-8 win in the semi-finals to set up this mouth-watering final against Kabras Sugar.

“Reaching the Kenya Cup final is a proud moment for the team,” said Menengai Oilers Head Coach, Gibson Were. “Our preparations have been focused, intense, and deliberate. We’ve built momentum at the right time, and there’s a real sense of belief in the camp. We’re looking forward to putting in a solid performance against a top side like Kabras and hopefully secure our first Kenya Cup title.”

KRU CEO Thomas Odundo expects a spectacular final. “Both teams have prepared extensively, and fans can look forward to high-quality rugby. Kakamega will come alive with energy, and we are thrilled to welcome rugby lovers from across the country.”

Adding to the excitement, Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), through its Tusker brand, will enhance the final’s atmosphere with vibrant on-ground activations, immersive fan engagements, and a festive celebration of Kenyan rugby, including an after-party with top DJs.

KBL will also reward the top-performing teams with prize money, incentivizing excellence and promoting the sport’s growth, with the winner taking home Ksh 300,000.

The stage is set for a thrilling Rai Derby as Kabras Sugar and Menengai Oilers battle for Kenya Cup glory.
