Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga has condemned President William Ruto’s government over ongoing demolitions in Voi, Taita Taveta County.
In a statement on social media, Odinga castigated the current administration for the ongoing demos in various parts of the country.
Some of the affected areas he listed include; Mavoko, Kakamega, Thika, Mombasa and Voi.
More than 3,000 residents were reportedly left homeless on Saturday, January 6 after government bulldozers brought down their homes at the break of dawn.
This was to hand over the land acquired for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
In his opinion however, Odinga opined that Ruto was going against his campaigns of stopping demolitions across the country.
“We call on the government to immediately stop the demolitions currently underway in Voi and any other part of the country…
“Ruto promised that where necessary, affected people would be provided with enough notice and compensation promptly paid. Victims of ongoing evictions in Voi and other parts of the country are waiting for these promises to be kept,” he added.
The Azimio honcho pointed fingers at the current government for allegedly duping the residents. Apparently, there was a scheduled meeting between government and the locals on Saturday afternoon.
They were however ambushed early morning despite their good will to reach an agreement. They reportedly sought compensation to enable them acquire alternative settlements.
“As the community prepared to meet this afternoon, demolition started early morning. The entire leadership of the National Government Administration Officers in the county has refused to respond to distress calls of residents and instead gone into hiding.
“This is happening in the middle of difficult economic times, and as parents prepare to send their children to school on Monday. Kenyans don’t deserve this amount of cruelty.”
He called on humanitarian organizations to help the affected families who are staring at hunger, among other challenges as predicted El Nino resumes across the country.
