Raila cuts short UK trip to celebrate 50th wedding anniversary

Azimio leader Raila Odinga terminated his trip to the UK to attend his 50th wedding anniversary which also coincides with his wife’s birthday.

Raila and Ida celebrated their wedding anniversary in a colourful event on Thursday, August 24, at the Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi.

The event that was also marking Ida’s 73 birthday was attended by close family friends, other Azimio leaders and music celebrities.

Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Likoni MP Mishi Mboko were among other dignitaries who attended the event.

Several celebrities including Esther Akoth (Akothee) and Prince Indah staged live performances during the party that went on beyond Thursday midnight.

At the same time, the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga, used the opportunity to present KSh1 million to her mother Ida, as a gift.

During speeches, the ODM leader described Ida as a friend and the true love of his life.

“Being married to you for five decades has brought me great joy, and celebrating this milestone with your birthday was awesome,” Raila said.

“Mama Ida, please accept my heartfelt gratitude for being not only the love of my life but also the bedrock and pillar of our family,” he added.

Raila left for a trip to the UK on August 18, after a brief meeting with US Senator Chris Coons at the JKIA.

The trip which was meant to last for two weeks, was cut short as the Azimio leader returned to the country to celebrate his wedding anniversary.

While leaving for the UK trip, Raila had hinted at taking a two-week break for resting away from home, as well as meeting business partners in Britain.
