Raila: Government is still unprepared to deal with floods

Azimio coalition leader Raila Odinga has spoken over recent floods which have claimed the lives and homes of many Kenyans.

In a press statement shared on his official account, Raila expressed sympathy for the people who have lost their homes and been impacted by the widespread floods across the nation.

“The destruction caused by raging floods across the country is overwhelming, heartbreaking and unbelievable. We extend our deepest sympathizes to those who are suffering as a result of this tragedy.”  part of the statement read.

He reassured those affected that he is actively mobilizing assistance by organizing fundraisers and contributing to national relief efforts, particularly through the Red Cross and other organizations.

Additionally, he appealed to government to prioritize the most urgent needs of low-income individuals nationwide and to ensure their voices are heard as recovery efforts persist.

“For the days ahead and as the rains continue, we ask the government to be proactive, clear the confusion being witnesses, end duplication and unnecessary competition within its ranks and create clarity over roles and responsibilities in the response and incident management system”

Raila pointed out that despite the government consistency in talking on matters climate, it lacks effective strategies to address the ongoing crisis.

He highlighted that even when the Meteorological Department had provided accurate predictions, there are still no proactive contingency in place.

“As a formation, we will help foster debate on this matter in the days and months ahead and t force the country to confront failure as a national emergency and scourge.”
