The government has officially handed over the Raila Odinga Stadium upgrading project to a contractor, paving the way for its expansion into a world-class 10,000-seat facility.
The project, launched today by Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Hon. Salim Mvurya and Principal Secretary (PS) Eng. Peter Tum, marks a major milestone in Kenya’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure nationwide.
Currently holding 2,000 spectators, the stadium will undergo extensive renovations, with completion scheduled for May 20, 2025. Once completed, it will serve as the official venue for the 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations.
A Commitment to Long-Term Sports Development
Speaking at the launch, CS Mvurya assured Homa Bay residents that the stadium upgrade is part of a broader national plan to develop sports facilities and nurture talent.
“I want to assure you that this is not just for Madaraka Day but also for long-term sports development in the region,” he emphasized.
PS Tum echoed this sentiment, reaffirming the government’s dedication to modernizing sports infrastructure in all 47 counties, in line with President William Ruto’s directive.
“We are committed to building facilities that serve not just as venues for national celebrations but also as platforms for talent development, grassroots competitions, and community recreation,” he stated.
Local Leadership Welcomes the Project
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga praised the development and thanked President Ruto for fulfilling his promise to upgrade the stadium.
“On December 27, 2024, President William Ruto, accompanied by Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, promised to upgrade this stadium. Today, we see that promise being fulfilled with the Cabinet Secretary and contractor on site,” Governor Wanga said.
She further emphasized:
“As the people of Homa Bay, we choose to focus on progress rather than propaganda.”
Boosting Sports and Economic Growth
The stadium expansion is expected to revitalize sports and economic activity in the region by providing a world-class venue for local and national events while also opening doors for future international tournaments.
