Raila Odinga’s AUC bid launch at State House, Nairobi

President William Ruto on Tuesday August 27, 2024 launched Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship at State House, Nairobi.

During the event, President Ruto endorsed Raila Odinga for AUC Chairperson role, recognising him as a celebrated and experienced statesman.

“I present to you a visionary Pan-African, a bold and wise leader, a professional and technocrat as well as a towering statesman and veteran mobiliser for positive change. I am confident that he will give his utmost and do all it takes to make Africa proud and powerful,” said Ruto.

He added that Africa is ripe for a historic radical moment.

At the same time, five presidents including Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, Samia Suluhu (Tanzania), Salva Kiir (South Sudan) and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo landed in Nairobi for the launch of Raila’s AUC bid.

Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Burundi Prime Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca, Foreign Affairs Minister of Rwanda Olivier Nduhungirehe and former Tanzania President Jakaya Kiwete were also  present.

Governors James Orengo (Siaya), Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay), Abdullswamad Nassir (Mombasa), Simba Arati (Kisii), and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Otsotsi were also present at State House, Nairobi for the launch of Raila Odinga’s AUC bid.

Other leaders present include deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, Prime cabinet secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Cooperatives CS Wycliffe Opranya, Mining CS Hassan Joho and UDA secretary general Hassan Omar.
