Suna East MP Junet Mohamed reaffirmed Raila Odinga’s leadership in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and warned against any discussions of succession within the party.
Speaking in Homa Bay County on Sunday, November 11, 2024 Junet dismissed any intentions by party members to position themselves as Raila’s successors, describing such ambitions as premature and even “treasonous.”
Junet emphasized that Raila remains the undisputed leader of ODM, regardless of the evolving political landscape.
The National Assembly minority leader highlighted that even if Raila is elected as the African Union Commission chairperson, he would still retain his position as ODM’s leader.
“Raila will be with us whether, in Addis Ababa, Somalia or Kenya; our leader is just one.
“If you can go after small seats like that of Gladys Wanga or mine, but for Raila, be very careful,” he said.
According to Junet, Raila’s extensive influence and legacy within the party and the nation warrant respect and loyalty from party members.
“Some people are bringing up a false and foolish discussion, claiming they want to inherit Baba (Raila Odinga).
I give a warning that it is an act of treason. If you talk about inheriting Raila, you will be punished in this town like a fool,” Junet added.
The remarks come amid speculation and internal tensions within ODM, as some leaders hint at the possibility of a leadership transition.
However, Junet was quick to criticize leaders engaging in what he referred to as “secession politics” within ODM, underscoring the importance of party unity and loyalty.
He argued that the focus should be on solidifying ODM’s position as a key player in national politics rather than stirring internal divisions.
In the meantime, Raila gave Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, a long-time ally, the party leadership.
Edwin Sifuna, the secretary general of the ODM and Senator Nairobi County, stated in a statement on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 that the Central Committee of the party had agreed to permit Raila to devote himself entirely on his AUC quest.
In his absence, the seasoned politician will depend on the Kisumu county chief to run the party’s operations.
According to Sifuna, the central committee can discuss issues impacting the people and the country of Kenya as a whole as well as internal party topics during its regular sessions.
