Former Manchester United star Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from football at the age of 31, following an injury-plagued spell at Como in Serie A.
The 31-year-old defender has endured a series of injuries, particularly to his knee, which limited him to just one appearance for Como after joining on a free transfer in the summer, following his departure from Old Trafford. Varane was initially expected to be sidelined for several months, and Como did not even register him as part of their Serie A squad. Rather than continuing to fight for fitness, Varane has made the difficult decision to retire, confirming the news in an emotional statement.
“They say all good things must come to an end,” Varane wrote in a heartfelt letter to fans on Instagram. “Throughout my career, I have faced many challenges and risen to the occasion time and again. Almost all of it seemed impossible at some point. The emotions, the special moments, and the memories I’ve made will last a lifetime. Reflecting on those moments fills me with immense pride and fulfillment as I announce my retirement from the game we all love. I have always held myself to the highest standards and want to bow out on a high, not just hang on. It takes immense courage to listen to your heart and instincts. Desire and need are two different things. I’ve fallen and risen countless times, but now, it’s time to hang up my boots, with my final game being a trophy win at Wembley.”
Varane continued, “I have loved fighting for myself, my clubs, my country, my teammates, and the supporters of every team I’ve played for. From Lens to Madrid, to Manchester United, and representing my national team, I have defended every badge with all my heart and loved every minute of the journey. Playing at the highest level tests every part of your body and mind. The emotions you experience as an athlete are unparalleled. We are never satisfied and never fully accepting of success — that drive fuels us. I have no regrets. I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve won more than I ever dreamed of, but beyond the trophies, I’m most proud of staying true to my principles and trying to leave every place better than I found it. I hope I made you all proud.”
Varane concluded his statement by looking toward the future: “And so, a new life begins off the pitch. I will remain with Como, just without my boots and shin pads. I look forward to sharing more about that soon. For now, to the supporters, teammates, coaches, and staff of every club I played for — from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this journey more special than I could have ever imagined. Thank you, football. With love, Rapha.”
The 93-cap France international, who retired from international duty in February 2023, leaves the game as a four-time Champions League winner, World Cup champion, and a player who has lifted numerous other titles. Having played for two of the world’s biggest clubs, Real Madrid and Manchester United, Varane retires with few unfulfilled ambitions.
