An illegal gun holder in Suguta Marmar, Samburu County, on Thursday, May 9 returned an AK47 rifle to police officers.
The National Police Service (NPS) says the person returned the gun and 28 rounds of ammunition.
“The National Police Service would like to appeal to all persons who are holding illegal firearms to voluntarily surrender the same to security agencies, including police stations,” says the NPS.
The government, In February 2023, launched a security operation dubbed ‘Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift’, to curb the cattle rustling menace in the region.
According to data from the NPS, 184 illegal firearms were recovered between February and April 2024.
Some of the surrendered firearms include M16, AK47, G3, Carbine Mark 11, as well as hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
The operation is conducted by a multi-agency team that consists of the NPS, the Kenya Defence Forces, and the National Police Reserve (NPR).
Recently, Samburu County Commissioner Henry Wafula commended the locals for their cooperation and the security teams for their efforts in their peace keeping mission.
