“Remain vigilant” Health Ministry issues advisory amid El Nino

The Ministry of Health has cautioned Kenyans to remain on high alert despite reduction in rainfall levels which wreaked havocs in the past weeks.

Mary Muthoni, Principal Secretary (PS) State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, in a statement reminded Kenyans to keep safe.

“As you are aware several areas/counties were affected by El Nino rains, though the rains have subsided the need for vigilance is important,” read part of her statement.

Risks posed by heavy rains

She went on to list some of risks Kenyans face in areas witnessing continued rainfall this festive season.

  • High risk of injuries and fatalities due to surface run-off and mudslides, particularly in hilly areas.
  • There is possible pollution of water with other waste matter including fecal matter as well as industrial waste especially in urban towns.
  • Inaccessible health facilities due to destroyed roads and other infrastructure.
  • Rise in waterborne diseases as a result of consuming or using contaminated water.
  • Possibility of increased vector-borne such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya among others due to high number of mosquitoes.

PS Muthoni further urged Kenyans to avoid crossing swollen rivers and move to higher areas particularly those prone to floods and landslides.

Health Ministry on food safety

To those already in the celebratory mood of marking various events including; weddings; dowry ceremonies, Christmas and others, the Ministry of Health set out guidelines pertaining to food safety.

PS Muthoni implored on Kenyans to avoid consuming meat that has not been inspected by a certified officer or even meat from dead animals.

Additionally, she urged the public to seek health services immediately after experience suspected food poisoning symptoms which is a common occurrence during celebrations.

In the same vein, the Health PS cautioned Kenyans against consuming illicit alcohol which is known for causing blindness, death among other dangers.

In a previous statement, the Ministry of Health raised concern over increased drug and substance abuse this festive season, which is a contributing factor to road accidents.
