Reports: Mauricio Pochettino set to lead the US Men’s National Team

Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is set to take charge of the US Men’s National Team (USMNT), according to multiple sources.

This decision follows the recent dismissal of Gregg Berhalter, who was let go after the USMNT’s disappointing group-stage exit in this summer’s Copa América.

Football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news on Thursday via X, stating, “Mauricio Pochettino becomes the new USMNT manager, leading the U.S. to World Cup 2026. After contacts with several managers, the former Chelsea and Spurs head coach says yes to the proposal and project, as per reports in the US overnight.”

The Athletic also corroborated this development, reporting that Pochettino “has agreed to become the next head coach of the U.S. men’s national soccer team.”

Pochettino, 52, has been out of work since leaving Chelsea earlier this summer by mutual consent after just one season at Stamford Bridge.

He is expected to be in charge for the USMNT’s game against Canada in Kansas City, Kansas, on September 7.

Pochettino’s appointment is seen as a significant step forward as the USMNT aims to turn its fortunes around and become a competitive side for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. Under Berhalter, the team endured turbulent times, including missing out on the 2018 World Cup.

Pochettino is known for his attacking style of football, and his leadership could transform the USMNT into a team capable of challenging top European countries in 2026.

Before finalizing Pochettino’s appointment, US Soccer reportedly tried to entice Jürgen Klopp back into management, but after the German declined, they turned their attention to Pochettino.
