Thomas Tuchel is reportedly set to become the next manager of the England national football team, according to multiple British and German media outlets. The Football Association (FA) has reached an agreement with the German coach, who will succeed Gareth Southgate as the permanent head coach.
Respected publications such as The Times, Sky Sports, BBC, and Germany’s Bild have all confirmed that Tuchel, 51, is expected to take charge of England, with an official announcement anticipated on Wednesday. The FA has refrained from commenting on the reports but stated that CEO Mark Bullingham will provide an update at Wembley Stadium when the appointment is likely to be confirmed.
Tuchel: A Proven Winner with Instant Impact
Tuchel, known for his tactical expertise and ability to deliver quick success, has enjoyed a stellar career with clubs like Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea, where he won the Champions League. However, his tenure at these clubs has often been short-lived, typically ending in disputes or disagreements with club management.
The FA had considered various candidates, but it became apparent that their dream target, Pep Guardiola, was unavailable due to his ongoing contract with Manchester City. With Guardiola out of reach and Jurgen Klopp taking on a new role with Red Bull, Tuchel emerged as the top candidate.
Why Not an English Manager?
Many had initially believed that interim coach Lee Carsley who led England to wins in his first two matches might be a long-term successor. However, after a disastrous defeat against Greece in the Nations League, Carsley’s chances of securing the role diminished drastically. His inconsistent statements about his ambitions for the job only added to the uncertainty surrounding his candidacy.
While there has been some discussion about Tuchel’s nationality, critics argue that England’s main priority should be securing a world-class manager who can get the best out of the current squad, which boasts some of the best players in the world. The debate over whether the new coach should be English seems outdated, especially given the lack of prominent English candidates with a proven track record at the highest level of football.
A New Era for England Under Tuchel?
With Tuchel poised to take over, England fans may finally get a tactician who can make the most of their talented roster. Although Southgate enjoyed eight years in charge and took the team to several notable tournaments, many believe the squad underperformed, particularly in last year’s World Cup, where England’s quarter-final exit against France left fans frustrated.
Tuchel’s experience and success across various leagues, including winning league titles and the Champions League, make him a compelling choice for the FA. His immediate task will be to guide England as the country aims to end its long-standing trophy drought.
