A multi-agency team comprising officers from the county government, Red Cross and security agencies on Wednesday April 24, 2024 continued with the rescue operation in Athi River, Machakos County following a heavy downpour.
A team from the national disaster management unit, Kenya Red Cross society and rescue officers from Machakos County were leading the rescue operation.
Other areas affected by floods in the county include Syokimau and Kitengela.
Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti and County commissioner Josphine Ouko were part of the team that was assisting residents who were affected by the floods.
Elsewhere in Nairobi, the heavy rains caused flooding in areas such as Mukuru, Mathare, Huruma, Ruaraka, Baba Dogo, Bosnia, and Umoja 3.
Floods were also experienced in Choka, Njiru, Ruai, Utawala, Githurai, Kahawa, Eastern Bypass, Kinoo, Kijabe, Limuru, Ruiru, Graceland, Joska, Kenyatta Road, Juja, and Magadi.
The floods were worsened by Athi River which burst its banks, accelerating the impacts.
Several roads and bridges were affected by the floods, leading to heavy traffic on major roads in Nairobi, Kiambu and Machakos.
