Rugby World Cup: Group stage matches highlights

NewsSportsWORLD

South Africa’s Springboks displayed a scintillating performance at Rugby World Cup final group stage fixture.

With their eyes firmly set on their title defence the South Africans dominated Tonga in a 49-18 encounter.

After having played a match ahead of Ireland and Scotland, coach Jacques Nienaber’s boys are now 15 points on top of Pool B ahead of the Irish and Scots who are at 14 and 10 points respectively.

This means that the three teams will be fighting for a chance to advance to the quarter-finals, and only two teams will qualify.

However, Ireland and Scotland are booked to face each other on Saturday for what will be a clash to die for.

Coach Jacques Nienabar expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance at the group stage.

“As things stand now, one of South Africa, Ireland, and Scotland will miss out on the quarter-final, but all three can still make it. The pool will only be decided on Saturday,” he said.

Rugby World Cup: Australia vs Portugal

On the same night, Australia kept its hopes of reaching the Rugby World Cup Quarterfinals stage alive with a perfect 34-14 win over Portugal.

This put them second in Pool C three points behind Wales who are top of the table with an impressive 14 points.

However, Australia faces a close contest to qualify for the quarter-finals, as a victory by Fiji, who are scheduled to play against Portugal, would certainly eliminate the Wallabies.

Portugal had initially secured an early advantage, but Eddie Jones’ team managed to score five tries, ensuring a bonus-point victory in St Etienne.

By halftime, Australia was leading 24-7 and added their fourth bonus-point try in the 47th minute.

The Rugby World Cup group matches will resume on Thursday, October 5 when New Zealand take on Uruguay and on Friday Hosts France take on Italy both are Pool A clashes.
