Former Manchester United caretaker coach Ruud van Nistelrooy is poised to become the next manager of Leicester City following the dismissal of Steve Cooper. The decision comes after Leicester endured a poor run of form, going five matches without a win and hovering just one point above the relegation zone.
Van Nistelrooy’s Managerial Record
The 48-year-old Dutchman briefly served as interim manager for Manchester United, overseeing four games after Erik ten Hag’s departure. Van Nistelrooy secured three wins during his short tenure, including victories over Leicester in both the League Cup and Premier League.
Before his interim stint at United, Van Nistelrooy managed PSV Eindhoven during the 2022/23 season, showcasing his coaching capabilities.
Steve Cooper’s Short Tenure Ends
Steve Cooper’s tenure at Leicester City lasted just five months. He struggled to find consistency with the team, leaving them in a precarious position in the Premier League standings. Cooper’s departure comes as the club seeks fresh leadership to steer them away from the relegation zone.
Contract Details and Other Candidates
According to British media reports, Van Nistelrooy’s contract could be finalized in time for him to take charge of Leicester’s game against Brentford on Saturday. Leicester’s owner, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, reportedly considered Niko Kovač (former Bayern Munich manager) and Carlos Corberán (current West Brom boss) before deciding on Van Nistelrooy.
A Glorious Playing Career
As a player, Van Nistelrooy was one of the most prolific strikers of his era. He enjoyed a storied career, most notably with PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United, and Real Madrid, earning acclaim for his clinical finishing and composure in front of goal.
