Sabina Chege loses whip position as court throws case out

Nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege has lost her position as the Deputy Minority Whip in the National Assembly.

Chege had filed a case in a Kiambu Court to challenge Azimio la Umoja’s decision to remove her from the position.

In a drastic turn of events, the case filed in Kiambu was dismissed paving the way for party procedures to take over.

As a result, Embakasi West MP Mark Muriithi Mwenje is set to become the new Deputy Minority Whip in the 13th Parliament.

In addition, the Jubilee Party has called for the Speaker, Moses Wetangula, to ratify this decision.

Sabina’s Removal

Azimio la Umoja had previously attempted to replace Sabina Chege on May 4, but Speaker Wetangula ruled against the move.

Nevertheless, Speaker Wetangula cited incomplete communication from the Minority Party and a lack of compliance.

His logic was, that there was no compliance with the National Assembly’s standing orders thus his ruling against Azimio’s bid.

Despite this, Azimio nominated Mark Muriithi Mwenje. Sabina Chege challenged her removal in court, leading to the recent dismissal of her case.

Until the courts make a final determination on the matter, Speaker Wetangula had previously halted any changes.

The speaker stated that Sabina Chege would continue to carry out her duties as Deputy Minority Whip.
