Safaricom has announced that it will be conducting a planned upgrade on its mobile money platform, M-Pesa, in the early hours of Monday, April 7, 2025.
The maintenance window is expected to last from 1:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.
In a statement released on Saturday, the telecommunications giant revealed that the temporary interruption is aimed at enhancing service efficiency and boosting overall user satisfaction.
The company noted that M-Pesa functionalities will be unstable throughout the 30-minute window. Services such as money transfers, airtime purchases, bill payments, and other financial transactions may experience disruptions.
Despite the brief downtime affecting M-Pesa, other key services provided by Safaricom — including voice calls, mobile data, and text messaging — will remain fully operational during the upgrade.
“We have scheduled this upgrade during the least active hours to reduce the impact on our customers,” the firm said, assuring users of its commitment to maintaining reliable services.
The firm also took the opportunity to thank its loyal subscribers for their continued trust, while expressing regret for any temporary inconvenience the process may cause.
This system upgrade comes as M-Pesa marks 18 years since its debut on March 6, 2007.
Initially introduced as a basic mobile money transfer tool, M-Pesa has grown into a key player in the fintech space — not only in Kenya but also across several countries.
Over nearly two decades, the platform has transformed how individuals and businesses handle transactions, enabling millions — especially those previously excluded from traditional banking systems — to access financial services through their phones.
Today, M-Pesa offers a wide array of solutions — from cross-border transfers and loans to savings and merchant payments — proving itself to be more than just a money transfer service.
Safaricom continues to invest in innovations that support financial inclusion and digital empowerment, with regular system updates being part of that mission.
