Sakaja orders closure of gas refilling stations near residential areas

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has ordered immediate closure all gas refilling stations within residential areas.

The governor made the directive while visiting families affected by the gas explosion that happened on February 1st 2024 in Embakasi area in Nairobi.

He visited families that lost their loved ones to commiserate and offer support.

After which he visited those at Embakasi Health Centre and Mama Lucy Hospital where injured persons continue to receive medical attention.

“We have agreed with EPRA and directed that all gas filling plants within 200m of a residential area to be closed forthwith,” he wrote in his X post.

Sakaja reassured the victims of the tragedy that the owners of the premises where the incident occurred would be held responsible and accountable.

Number of casualties in the Embakasi explosion

“I have directed all the 17 subcounty administration officers to ensure all gas businesses operating within residential areas are closed with immediate effect,” the governor said.

The explosion killed 6 people leaving 280 injured.

One of the owners of the illegal gas plant surrendered to the police station accompanied by a lawyer and was grilled by detectives.

“Life is important than money, kindly let’s all be cautious and speak whenever we see such illegal activities,” he said.

On February 6th 2024, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal investigations (DCI) have arrested three Nema officials in connection to the Embakasi explosion. 

The DCI noted that the three have been arrested as the search for other suspects continues.

Displaced families were accommodated at social hall where the Nairobi County government was feeding them.
