The Sakaja Super Cup, now in its second edition, has entered the quarterfinal stage, bringing heightened excitement to football enthusiasts across Nairobi.
Governor Johnson Sakaja distributed uniforms to the 136 teams that have qualified for this crucial phase of the tournament.
Speaking at the event in Nairobi, Governor Sakaja expressed his satisfaction with the level of competition displayed so far.
“I am happy that we are now in this phase of the quarterfinals. To motivate the teams, we have issued these uniforms as they prepare for the upcoming matches,” he said.
The tournament, which began with over 780 teams from Nairobi estates, has served as a platform for young players to showcase their talent.
The final is set for December, where the winning team will walk away with a grand cash prize. Governor Sakaja also announced plans to construct a home ground for the inaugural Sakaja Super Cup champions, Githurai All Stars, as part of his administration’s commitment to promoting grassroots sports.
“We have put measures in place to ensure it is catered for. We encourage all teams to give their best as there is a significant reward ahead,” he said.
The governor highlighted the positive impact of the derby, which has engaged the youth in constructive activities while fostering community cohesion.
“This tournament has offered our youth a chance to focus on productive endeavors, reducing crime in our neighborhoods. As we approach the quarter-finals, we urge the teams to raise their game,” he added.
As the Sakaja Super Cup progresses, teams are gearing up for fierce competition, fueled by dreams of lifting the prestigious title and winning the lucrative rewards.
The first edition of the Sakaja Super Cup, held late last year, saw Githurai All-Stars from Roysambu Sub-County crowned champions, walking away with a grand prize of Sh 3 million.
Runners-up and third-place teams received Sh2 million and Sh1 million, respectively.
