Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson has unveiled a strategy to establish the Green Nairobi Company Limited, a new parastatal dedicated to maintaining the city’s cleanliness, akin to the role of Nairobi Water in managing water services.
Sakaja says this initiative will enhance the city’s cleanliness and waste management.
“This entity will operate independently, ensuring consistent funding for its operations. Garbage collectors will continue their services but will be required to adhere to new procedures designed to improve efficiency and effectiveness in waste management,” Sakaja stated.
The county has also entered into a waste-to-energy agreement aimed at converting waste at Dandora into energy, promoting sustainable waste management practices. To enforce this initiative, stringent penalties will be imposed on individuals and entities found dumping waste illegally.
“We will put an end to illegal dumping and impose heavy fines to ensure that all waste is disposed of at the Dandora dumpsite. This will enable us to transform waste into energy once the plant is operational,” he said.
In addition to structural changes, the Governor announced the recruitment of over 3,500 young people and the deployment of trucks to assist in cleaning the city. “These youths help alot to clean our estates and once Green Nairobi Company limited is established more will benefit and it shall be more effective,” Sakaja confirmed while speaking on Jeff Koinange Live Show.
