Sammy Wainaina Says Clergy Are Kenya’s Biggest Problem, Not Politicians

interestNational News

Sammy Wainaina, Anglican Church of Kenya priest is known for his outspoken views, aimed at his fellow Kenyan religious leaders.

He drew attention to the fact that even Jesus Christ faced formidable opposition from religious leaders, as depicted in the Bible.

Contrary to popular belief politicians are the primary culprits for Kenya’s challenges.

Wainaina asserted that the clergy, benefiting from corruption, are the root cause of the country’s problems.

In a forthright manner, Wainaina accused religious leaders of exploiting their positions for personal and collective economic gain. Photo: Sammy Wainana/Facebook.

He posed a poignant question: “Is that the kind of gospel we want in Kenya?”

According to him, the significant problem in the country lies not with politicians but with religious leaders who benefit individually and institutionally from the prevailing corrupt system.

The cleric advocated for a private mode of communication as the initial approach before addressing issues on a public platform.

Further, the clergy shared that he had privately communicated with retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, expressing his concerns about certain actions.

He emphasized the importance of attempting private discourse first.

If unsuccessful, resorting to public platforms, citing the responsibility bestowed upon religious leaders through their votes.

Wainaina also criticized President William Ruto’s government for allegedly reneging on its promise to reduce taxes.

A point he had raised earlier. He dismissed the notion that religious organizations should refrain from questioning the government.

Asserting that it is their rightful place to critique those in power.

According to Wainaina, the government was using Christianity as a shield to mask its questionable practices.

Including corruption and suppressing opposition voices.

He emphasized the need for religious leaders to fulfil their duty of holding the government accountable for the nation’s well-being.
