Samuel Eto’o has tendered his resignation as president of the Cameroon Football Federation, but the executive committee rejected it. Eto’o, a four-time African Player of the Year winner, has faced accusations of misconduct, match-fixing, and corruption.
The federation stated that its executive committee convened in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, to assess the national team’s performance at the Africa Cup of Nations. During the meeting, Eto’o proposed stepping down, urging other members to consider doing the same “in good faith.”
However, after discussions and deliberations, the executive committee unanimously decided to maintain their current positions and declined Eto’o’s resignation.
The statement did not mention any other decisions made during the meeting. The future of Cameroon’s coach, Rigobert Song, remained uncertain following the team’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
“At the end of discussions and subsequent deliberations, the executive committee members decided to maintain their current mandates and thus unanimously rejected the president’s resignation,” the federation said in a statement.
Despite needing a victory in their final group match to advance to the next stage, Cameroon secured a late win. Still, they were subsequently eliminated by Nigeria in the round of 16 after a lackluster display.
Eto’o, who celebrated with the team after their crucial win against Gambia, has faced allegations of corruption over the past year.
