‘Dance ya Kudonjo’ hitmaker Sean Mwaniki alias Sean MMG has finally explained the reason behind his peculiar nickname, ‘Magi Magi’.
In an interview with Billy Miya on Radio47’s ‘Maskani47’, Sean shared that he received the nickname during a football match.
Sean recounted that the match’s commentator mistakenly called him ‘Magi Magi’ instead of his actual nickname, MMG.
He said the ‘Magi Magi’ misnomer continued throughout the match, leading to its adoption by fans in attendance.
“Tulikuwa tunacheza a football match with kina Film Stylist, ambao walikuwa group ya Youtube wakati huo, pamoja na Mbuzi Gang, akina Fathermore. Sasa yule commentator alisoma jina vibaya. Badala ya kusoma MMG akasoma ‘Magi Magi’. Game mzima huyo commentator alishinda hivyo mpaka watu wakaanza kuniita Magi Magi,” said Sean.
Sean revealed that he obtained the MMG tag from Ongata Rongai’s infamous Catalyst matatu, which, at its peak, won accolades, including at the 2016 Nganya Awards.
He clarified that the acronym MMG pays tribute to Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group and was prominently displayed on the side of the Catalyst matatu.
“MMG inamaanisha Maybach Music Group, but nilitoa kwa graffiti ya matatu. Kuna matatu ilikuwa inaitwa Catalyst. MMG ilikuwa imeandikwa hapo juu. Catalyst ilikuwa Kenya One na hapo ndio jina lilitokea,” said Sean.
The rapper went on to celebrate his ‘Statue’ collaboration with Tanzanian songbird Marioo.
He said the song which featured his frequent collaborator Fathermoh, Ssaru and Motif was a masterpiece.
“Hio ni kazi ilipigwa inavyofaa. Wao [Tanzanians] pia wana-enjoy, wanaskia flavour ya hapa fiti,” said Sean.
The month-old ‘Statue’ is currently enjoying rave reviews and has amassed over 3.4 million views on YouTube.
