The Senate Energy Committee has issued a request to Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome to arrest Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja for failing to honor their summons.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who is a member of the committee, stated that Sakaja had failed to appear before them multiple times over the Embakasi gas explosion.
“The Senate Energy Committee looking into the Mradi gas explosion in Embakasi has resolved to fine Governor Sakaja another ksh 500,000 and requested the IG of Police to arrest and present him to the committee on 25th April 2024.
“He failed to appear again this morning,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Governor Sakaja has now failed to appear before the committee three times in a row.
On March 28, Energy Commitee Chair Senator Wahome Wamatinga resolved to fine Governor Sakaja KSh500,000 for failing to appear before the committee.
On that day, Sakaja instead hosted President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua at the Holy Oil Celebrations of the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa in Makadara, Nairobi County.
Narok Senator Ledama Olekina, who is also a member of the committee, slammed Sakaja for his ‘arrogance’.
“Governor Sakaja’s lack of regard for Parliament is alarming. We have summoned him again and fined him Ksh 500,000,” he wrote.
Sakaja is expected before the committee to shed light on the February 2 gas explosion which left seven people dead. Senate raised questions over who authorized setting up of an LPG facility within a residential area.
The city governor is not new to such as he was slapped with a similar fine in November last year for failing to appear before the Senate Roads and Housing Committee to respond to queries on regeneration projects within Nairobi.
He is however not the first county boss to dismiss Parliamentary summons on various issues.
