Nyandarua Senator John Methu is under fire from Kenyans online for making tribal remarks at a public forum.
In a video making rounds on the internet, the first time senator was heard asking a senior government official to be biased in appointments against a certain community.
Methu was addressing residents in his backyard at an event graced by Cooperatives and MSMEs Development Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui.
“CS Chelugui ukiangalia uone jina inasoma Kip-something, Kamau, Njoroge, unaongeza kidogo, lakini ya hawa akina Omondi, Omollo, unaweza punguza kidogo.
(CS Chelugui, if you look at the name, it reads Kip-something, Kamau, Njoroge, you add a little, but for these Omondi, Omollo, you can reduce a little),” he said, attracting laughter from the audience.
He quickly justified his sentiments, saying that it would be a reward to the people of Mt Kenya and Rift Valley regions for voting in the current government.
“Kwa sababu kuna kitu inaitwa kuvuna mahali ambapo mtu alipanda. Na kuna kitu inaitwa kufurahia kupiga kura.
(Because there is something called reaping where one sowed. And there is something called enjoying voting),” the senator added.
A section of Kenyans online were irked by his remarks, questioning how a national leader would propagate tribalism instead of preaching unity.
“What’s happening here? There is huge concern with what he is saying plus number 2: The people are laughing almost urging Senator on. Who is to blame?” media personality Willis Raburu posed.
“Wenye wako hapo nje, has your favourite Luo liberator issued a statement regarding the ethnic drivel by Nyandarua Senator John Methu, or they’re waiting for my grandmother’s cat, Midusa?” Gabriel Oguda challenged.
“John Methu owes the country an apology. That was so so wrong,” Edu Sheru wrote.
“What is the position of all posh Luos who have always said that Ruto is the liberator Luo Nyanza needs, especially when Nyandarua Senator John Methu publicly mocks Luos?” Kulo Conrad queried.
