Senator Okiya Omtatah was on Friday morning involved in a road accident on his way to Busia.
The accident, which occurred at Ojola area, involved a trailer which reportedly lost control and hit his vehicle under registration KDG 287E.
Senator Omtatah’s vehicle was thrown off the road although he did not sustain any injuries.
Speaking to The Star, he said that the trailer came to a halt in a ditch a few meters off the road.
“The vehicle hit mine as I tried to swerve. The trailer landed in a ditch. It was going to be a bad accident but I was lucky. By the time it reached my vehicle, it was moving aside. I had a driver,” he was quoted as saying.
Omtatah went on to state that his car luckily did not roll over hence the situation did not get worse for him.
“The car did not roll. I had my seatbelt on so I did not get any injuries,” the politician added.
Officers from Maseno Police Station intervened and offered to drive him home in their Landcruiser.
His damaged vehicle was left at the station pending processing of the incident, and record taking.
“All is well. The driver of the trailers said his brakes failed. The vehicle could not move police from Maseno gave me a Landcruiser to drive me home.”
This comes against the backdrop of worrying number of road accidents in Kenya in the new year.
A report from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicated that road accidents have claimed 563 lives since January 1 to February 11, 2024.
The statistics are an increase compared to deaths recorded during the same period in 2023 which stood at 537.
So far, 35 drivers have lost their lives in road accidents, while 216 passengers died on the roads.
