Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has expressed pride in Kenyans for realizing their power over elected leaders.
Speaking during an interview on Wednesday January 15, 2025, Sifuna said this is a major political shift over the past one year, stating, “This is one of the biggest political changes that has taken shape, over the last one and a half years in the country.”
Sifuna highlighted how, for years, elected officials felt superior to voters, but the June 2024 protests changed this mindset.
“For many years, elected leaders have believed that they are more superior than the people who elected them,” he said.
The protests led President William Ruto to reject the Finance Bill, 2024, despite its approval in the National Assembly.
Sifuna emphasized that the biggest political change is Kenyans recognizing their power, which fills him with pride.
“The biggest political change we have experienced in the past year and a half is the realization by citizens that they are more powerful than the leaders,” he explained.
In addition, he pointed out that while leaders initially saw themselves as more powerful, the June 2024 protests showed that ordinary citizens can challenge them.
“After June 25, Kenyans realized that they are very powerful,” Sifuna added.
He also noted that recent comments from some elected leaders reveal their fear.
“Even when you hear the statements coming from the leaders, my view is that these politicians are very afraid,” he said.
