Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna says he has prepared an amendment that will revolutionised Kenya’s energy sector and obliterate cartels at Kenya Power.
Coming hot on the heels of a national power blackout that has plagued the country since Friday, August 25, Senator Sifuna says that during his time as a member of the Senate Energy Committee, he learnt of a “very powerful office at KPLC called a dispatcher”.
“A person who has a view of all our power generation plants and decides whose power is “dispatched” (added to the grid) and when,” the lawmaker says.
Sifuna says that the said ‘dispatcher’ would curtail cheaper green energy generators for more expensive generators.
“We heard testimony from cheaper green energy generators being “curtailed” (essentially being told not to supply) with the dispatcher opting for electricity from more expensive thermal generators. I have prepared an amendment to the Energy Act to bring greater transparency hapo kwa dispatcher. Hapo kuna mchezo. The bill is ready for publication,” he adds.
