Sergio Ramos scores own goal to send Barcelona top

SportsWORLD

Former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos scored an own goal, resulting in a 1-0 victory for Barcelona against Sevilla in a La Liga match played at the Camp Nou on Friday, September 29, 2023.

Barcelona seemed destined for a second consecutive La Liga draw after their 2-2 stalemate with Mallorca earlier in the week until Ramos’ own goal occurred with 14 minutes left in the match.

This victory propelled Barcelona to the top of the table, one point ahead of Girona and two ahead of Real Madrid, who were scheduled to play Girona on Saturday.

Following their draw with Mallorca on Tuesday, Xavi made four lineup changes, including the return of Robert Lewandowski.

Jules Kounde partnered with Andreas Christensen in defence, and 16-year-old Lamine Yamal was given a starting position.

As for Sevilla, 37-year-old Ramos, who had returned to his childhood club a month ago after spending 16 years at Bernabeu and two seasons with Paris St Germain, was one of five changes made by the team for their match at Barcelona’s temporary home at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium.

Sevilla had arrived for the Friday night fixture unbeaten in their last four matches, following a 5-1 win over Almeria during the week. However, Barcelona dominated the opening exchanges of the game, with Joao Felix playing a significant role.

With 75 minutes on the clock, Barcelona received a fortunate break when Yamal’s header, from Ferran Torres’ cross, found its way to Ramos, the former Real defender who had previously scored five times in 33 appearances against Barcelona. Unfortunately for Ramos, he inadvertently scored past Nyland.

Following this unexpected turn of events, a disoriented Sevilla side failed to mount a comeback, allowing Barcelona to secure the victory.
