Political analyst Herman Manyora has joined the bandwagon of Kenyans supporting proposal to increase the presidential term limit from five years to seven years.
Taking to his X page on Thursday, Manyora stated that the proposal was okay but with certain conditions.
“Seven-year presidential term limit is okay. But it should be one term that is not renewable. Fanya moja ung’atuke (Finish your term and go),” he argued.
According to the seasoned analyst, such a move would allow the president to work for Kenyans without losing focus.
“This way the president will work without looking at the next election,” he added.
Why seven-year term limit- Cherargei
The proposal was raised by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, who argued that five years was not enough for a head of state to carry out his mandate.
“Normally in Kenya one year after assuming office you go through the Supreme Court litigations then issues of settling down like Cabinet appointments and realigning your government… Then the fifth year the country goes back to campaign mode. Even statistics have shown the economy did badly in that year. So you only have three years to work for the people.
“I think if you give 7 years as the term limit for the President, you minus the two (one in settling and one during the campaigning period) you will get 5 years which all Kenyans are arguing about,’ Cherargei explained.
To achieve this, Kenyans will have to go for a referendum.
