Several people feared dead in Mai Mahiu LPG trailer crash

Several people were feared dead on Wednesday September 11, 2024 following an incident where an LPG trailer lost control and collided with three vehicles, including a matatu and a hearse in Mai Mahiu.

Images shared on social media depicted the 14-seater matatu being struck from behind and tumbling down the escarpment, ending up overturned.

The other two vehicles, including a hearse crashed, causing injuries to passengers.

Good Samaritans and emergency responders swiftly arrived at the site following the accident, leading to a traffic congestion in the area.

Preliminary information suggests that multiple individuals were stuck beneath an overturned matatu after the crash in Mai Mahiu.

The Red Cross report

The Red Cross reported that one person died on spot, another one was in critical condition and was swiftly taken to hospital, while eleven others had minor injuries.

A family transporting a deceased loved one from Nairobi to Rongo faced a double tragedy as the vehicle they were in rolled down the escarpment after the accident.

What led to the accident

According to the reports, the LPG truck driver attempted to manage the vehicle that lost its brakes before the accident occurred.

Witnesses described how the Galaxy Shuttle matatu rolled down a cliff, ending up overturned alongside another van.

A tour van was also impacted, with the rear window completely shattered.

Police have not yet released an official statement regarding the crash.

This incident happened within a month after another accident along the Meru- Nairobi highway at Nithi Bridge that resulted in the death of 12 people.
