Shabana FC appeals FKF Ban: Seeks to overturn sanctions over Ulinzi Stadium incident

Shabana FC has filed an urgent appeal with the Sports Disputes Tribunal in an effort to overturn the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) sanctions imposed on the club following the vandalism incident involving fans during their match against Ulinzi Stars at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday.

The FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee sanctioned Shabana FC after acts of hooliganism, where seats were damaged, and two police officers were injured. The punishment includes a five-match ban on hosting fans for their home games, and Shabana is also required to cover the medical expenses for the injured officers as well as the costs for repairing the damaged seats.

Represented by Steve Ombasa and Company Advocates, the club has lodged an appeal to suspend the sanctions, pending a full hearing by the tribunal. The legal team argues that the imposed penalties are too harsh and should be reconsidered. Shabana’s leadership believes that overturning or suspending the ruling would be a significant win for the Kisii-based club as it seeks justice.

The incident, which led to the sanctions, occurred when Shabana fans reacted angrily after the club conceded a late equalizer in the 2-2 draw. Fans reportedly felt the officiating was biased, particularly over the decision to allow the equalizing goal beyond the stipulated stoppage time. The unrest led to damage in the stadium and injuries to two officers.

The Sports Disputes Tribunal, chaired by John Ohaga, is expected to review Shabana’s appeal and make a ruling in the coming days. If Shabana’s request is granted, the club could see the sanctions suspended, allowing fans to attend future home games while the case is being fully determined.
