COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has called on Kenyans to respect President William Ruto and his administration, emphasizing the importance of upholding the dignity of the presidency.
Speaking at a public event in Bungoma on January 3, 2024, Atwoli urged citizens to support the government’s efforts to implement its agenda.
At the same time, Atwoli addressed recent reports of abductions, alleging that some individuals are staging their own disappearances to solicit funds from organizations.
“Some people are abducting themselves so that they can get money from certain organizations, shenzi sana” he claimed.
His remarks have sparked a heated debate among leaders. Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya dismissed Atwoli’s assertions, expressing concern over the safety of citizens.
Natembeya insisted that genuine cases of abductions and killings are a growing problem. “Our children are getting lost and others are being killed. That is the true position,” he said.
President Ruto has also weighed in on the issue, reiterating his administration’s commitment to ending extrajudicial killings and abductions in the country.
He emphasized the need for collective responsibility, urging parents to guide their children and for citizens to engage respectfully on social media.
“The police must do what they have to do… we need a wholesome social approach to ensure our democracy does not become chaotic and abusive,” the President said.
The discourse has highlighted the complexities surrounding the issue of abductions in Kenya, with leaders calling for both personal responsibility and decisive government action.
