Shock as form four student gives birth while at school and throws baby in pit latrine, baby rescued alive

Bomet County residents were shocked on Monday March 24, 2025 in the morning after a form four student at Koiyet Secondary School secretly delivered a baby inside the school’s pit latrine and attempted to return to class as if nothing had happened.

The bizarre incident paralyzed normal school programs as students and teachers grappled with the unfolding situation.

According to Chepalungu Sub-County Police Commander Phanton Analo, the school principal reported the incident after noticing that the 19-year-old student was bleeding excessively while seated in class. Alarmed classmates quickly alerted the teacher on duty, who rushed to the scene to offer help.

Upon probing, it was discovered that the student had given birth earlier that morning inside the school’s toilet. In an attempt to conceal the act, she reportedly threw the newborn into the pit latrine before rejoining her classmates in class.

The school administration, with the help of members of the public, immediately organized a rescue operation.

The infant was successfully retrieved from the latrine alive and was rushed to Sigor Sub-County Hospital for emergency medical attention. Both the mother and child were later referred to Longisa County Hospital for specialized care.

Police officers have launched investigations into the incident, with preliminary reports indicating that the student may have been trying to hide the pregnancy from both her family and the school administration.

The incident has sparked conversations about teenage pregnancies and the need for enhanced reproductive health education and support systems in schools.

Many residents and education stakeholders have called for counseling services to be provided to the affected students, as well as increased awareness campaigns to address the rising cases of teenage pregnancies in the region.

The infant is reported to be in stable condition as the investigation continues.
