Shujaa are back to the World Rugby Sevens series

Kenya’s rugby sevens men’s team, Shujaa, has reclaimed their place in the World Rugby Sevens series after beating Germany 33-15 in their promotion playoff match played Sunday in Madrid, Spain.

Coach Kevin Wambua’s charges had to break a sweat for the win, rallying from a try down.

Chris Umeh drew first blood for the Germans in the first minute, but Shujaa responded in kind, co-captain Vincent Onyala leading from the front once again with Kenya’s first try in the second minute.

Shujaa’s momentum seemed to wither momentarily after Chrisant Ojwang was sent to the sin bin.

The Germans made the numerical advantage count, and they went over with their second try through Niklas Kach.

The conversion flew way off the target, much to the relief of the Kenyans who sang their lungs out in both halves.

Ojwang came back from the naughty chair less than two minutes before the end of the opening half, and his impact was immediately felt.

Felix Okoth set him up for a try, and he did not hesitate to send the crowd into cheers. The conversion attempt went wide.

In the final minutes of the opening half, Kenya won the maul, and a series of passes saw the ball land on Okoth, who raced clear to add more points to the scoreboard.

The Kenyans came in breathing fire in the final half to score more points, further weakening their opponents.

Onyala secured the lineout, and Okoth was sharp enough to catch a lapse in the Germans’ defense to go over with another try.

Germany responded with a five-pointer, but the Kenyans had already done the damage.

George Ooro and Kevin Wekesa scored the final points for Shujaa, seeing the full-time score at 33-15.
