Shujaa soar into Singapore 7s semi-finals with dominant pool play

The Kenya Sevens team, Shujaa, have secured a coveted spot in the HSBC Singapore Sevens Cup semi-finals, topping Pool B after impressive victories over Ireland and France.

The team’s performance marks their first semi-final appearance since being promoted back to the World Series in the 2024/25 season.

Shujaa kicked off their campaign with a strong showing against Ireland, winning 17-7 in the opening match of the men’s competition. Nygel Amaitsa set the tone early with a try and conversion within the first two minutes, giving Kenya a 7-0 lead.

Kevin Wekesa added to the score with another try in the sixth minute, pushing the score to 12-0 by halftime. Patrick Odongo further extended Shujaa’s lead in the 12th minute, making it 17-0. Ireland managed a late consolation try through Josh Costello, converted by Mark Roche, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.

In their second pool match against France, Shujaa once again demonstrated their mettle. Vincent Onyala sliced through the French defense in the third minute, with Nygel Amaitsa adding the extras, giving Kenya a 7-0 lead at halftime.

France, the Olympic gold medalists, responded after the break with a try from Quere Kabaka, converted by Enahemo Artaud, leveling the score.

With the game hanging in the balance, Shujaa secured a penalty 40 meters out in the dying minutes. Nygel Amaitsa stepped up and coolly slotted the ball through the uprights, securing a 10-7 victory for Kenya and a place in the semi-finals.

Shujaa’s opponent in the semi-final will be determined after the final round of pool matches. The first Cup semi-final is scheduled for 9:34 AM on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Fans are eagerly anticipating the match as Shujaa aims to continue their impressive run in the Singapore Sevens.
