Siaya chief fighting for his life after rowdy youth attacked him for stopping ‘disco matanga’

An assistant chief in Alego Usonga Sub-County is critically injured following an assault by a group of enraged youth at a ‘disco matanga’.

He was allegedly attacked because he had intervened to halt a night vigil commonly referred to as a “disco matanga” in the area.

“He heard loud music within his jurisdiction and went to investigate. Upon arrival, he discovered a night vigil underway and attempted to turn off the loud music,” a police report says, as reported by Nation.Africa.

However, a group of young men wielding machetes and other crude weapons reportedly emerged and began attacking him.

The report adds: “The mourners responded swiftly and rescued the victim from his attackers.”

The local administrator was rushed to Siaya County Referral Hospital after sustaining deep injuries on the head and in unstable condition.

Police have since arrested one suspect. 28-year-old Stephen Onyango, police say, is the mastermind behind the attack.

During the operation, officers recovered a machete believed to have been used in the attack.
