Siaya criminal gang member who killed police officer escorting KCSE papers arrested

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has announced the arrest of a criminal gang member in Siaya following a tip off from members of public.

25-year-old Hasting Omondi Odipo also known as Martin aka Umar is among the criminal gang that stabbed a police to death injuring another and robbed them of their AK47 riffles when they were escorting KCSE exam officials to Mahero Secondary school.

The DCI had published the names and photos of Omondi and his associates Including Eliud Omondi Alias Rashid ,Simon Ochieng Ouma known as Ali Baba, Salima Jakoyo and Edward Wanyama.

On November 20 the two police officers were attacked as they were en route escorting KCSE exam papers to Mahero Secondary School in Alego Usonga, Siaya County.

One of the officers died on the spot while the other sustained serious injuries from the ambush.

The officers were in the company of the exams center manager, who scampered to safety when the thugs appeared with crude weapons.

The thugs managed to escape with the officers’ firearms an AK47 and an MP5 according to police reports.

However Detectives in Siaya managed to recover the stolen weapon two days later together with seized 20 rounds of 7.62mm caliber, 24 rounds of 9mm caliber, and various mobile phones at the scene.

During the attack Security personnel rushed to the scene and took the injured officer to Siaya County Referral Hospital for treatment.

The body of the deceased was taken to the hospital’s mortuary

Police at the time revealed that the two officers and the teachers had just alighted from the Vehicle that had taken them to collect from Siaya County Headquarters.

However, they were forced to get out of the vehicle to walk to the school which is a few meters away because the road heading to the school is inaccessible by vehicles due to its poor state.
