A 17-year-old Form 3 student tragically lost his life after being struck by lightning in Anduro village, located in Nyandiwa sub-location, Alego-Usonga sub-county.
Emanuel Otieno was a student at Ambira Boys’ High School.
According to Joseph Otieno Aloo, the Assistant Chief of Nyandiwa sub-location, the incident happened when the boy had been sent home for school fees.
On Sunday, he attended a church service with his cousins until about 4 PM, after which he took his father’s motorbike to drop his relatives off in Siaya town.
How the form 3 student got struck
Emanuel was just 400 meters away from others when lightning struck, but his cousins managed to escape unharmed.
They quickly raised the alarm, and he was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.
The administrator noted that the situation is puzzling, as it wasn’t raining at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, the boy’s body was moved to a private hospital mortuary for an autopsy.
This comes five days after nine students from St. Aloys Mayenya Secondary School in Kisumu East sub-county were hospitalized due to injuries caused by strong winds that destroyed classrooms during heavy rains last evening.
Whereas other students also sustained injuries, they were treated and released from St. Elizabeth Hospital in Chiga.
According to the school principal, Judith Atieno, the thunderstorm damaged two classrooms and the staff room during the heavy rainfall.
