Siaya: Gold mine shaft collapses burying woman alive

In a heart-wrenching incident at Uradi village, Siaya County, a 32-year-old woman, Rosemary Anyango, lost her life on Monday evening when a gold mining shaft tragically caved in, burying her alive.

Rosemary, along with four other women, was engaged in her routine mining activities when disaster struck.

While her companions managed to escape with minor injuries, Rosemary found herself trapped at the deepest part of the shaft.

Grace Otieno, the area Assistant Chief, shared that despite desperate attempts to save her.

Rosemary could not be reached in time. Brandon Omondi, a brave 20-year-old man, was among those who tried to rescue her.

In his attempt to enter the collapsed shaft, Brandon sustained injuries to his lower limbs as the ground continued to give way.

He was quickly rushed to Siaya County Referral Hospital, where he received treatment before being discharged.

The Assistant Chief confirmed that Rosemary’s body was later recovered and taken to the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary.

In the wake of this tragedy, Otieno took the opportunity to warn artisanal gold miners about the dangers of continuing their operations during the rainy season.

She emphasized that the mining shafts, weakened by the rain, pose significant risks to those working in them.

The loss of Rosemary Anyango has left the community in deep sorrow, highlighting the perilous conditions under which many miners work in their pursuit of livelihood.
