Award-winning artiste Damini Ebunoluwa alias Burna Boy has rattled the Afro Beats community with his recent comments.
In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the celebrated Afro beats artiste called out 90% of that genre’s artistes as ‘shallow’.
“90 percent of them have no real-life experiences that they can understand, which is why you hear most of Nigerian Music or I will say African Music, I don’t even know what to say, Afrobeats that’s what you people call it is mostly about nothing, literally nothing, there is no substance to it, like nobody is talking about anything, it’s just a great time, just an amazing time,” Burna Boy said.
According to Burna Boy, artistes with depth make more meaningful music.
“The music should be the essence of the artiste. Speaking for myself, the artiste is the person who has good days, bad days and worse days. That is the experience I should be giving you as an artiste,” added Burna.
He dropped his album ‘I Told Them’ on Wednesday, a day after this interview.
