Sir Alex Ferguson will step down from his role as Manchester United ambassador at the end of the current season, bringing an end to over a decade of association with the club since his retirement as manager in 2013.
During his post-managerial career, the 82-year-old has served as both a global ambassador and club director, while remaining a familiar face in the directors’ box during games at Old Trafford. Ferguson has reportedly earned a multi-million pound salary for his services in these roles.
According to club sources, the decision was made amicably after a direct conversation between Ferguson and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, one of United’s co-owners, last week. Despite stepping down from his formal duties, Ferguson will always be welcome at the club, where he is regarded as Manchester United’s most successful manager, having won an unprecedented 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies, five FA Cups, and four League Cups, among numerous other accolades.
Cost-Cutting Measures at Manchester United
Ferguson’s departure comes as part of Ratcliffe’s plan to reduce operational costs and increase investment in the team. Over 250 staff members have already been made redundant, with the club anticipating savings of around £10 million a year.
These financial adjustments follow Manchester United’s announcement of a £113 million net loss last month. The club is now close to the Premier League’s £115 million three-year loss limit and remains committed to adhering to the league’s financial regulations.
Current State of Manchester United
On the pitch, Manchester United has struggled, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League. Erik ten Hag remains in charge of the team, despite growing speculation regarding his future. United’s next match is against Brentford this Saturday, where the team will hope to reverse their fortunes.
