Milimani High Court has been urged to give the highest possible sentence to six individuals convicted of the murder of former Juja Member of Parliament George Thuo.
The six accused were declared guilty of murder in a session on Tuesday, May 28.
George Thuo passed away in 2013 shortly after visiting a well-known restaurant in Thika Town, Kiambu County.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) managed to prove to the High Court without a doubt that the MP’s death was caused by poisoning with Cyhalothrine Pesticide.
Cyhalothrine is a common pesticide in Kiambu, used to manage pests that harm crops and vegetables on farms. It is easily accessible and plays a vital role in protecting agricultural produce from damage.
The prosecution informed the court that the convicted individuals showed no remorse and thus should not be granted leniency. It also urged the court to take into account the family’s statement and suffering.
Thuo’s wife mentioned in court that her husband was good in health before his sudden passing. She also stated that her husband died while in the company of the six convicted individuals.
“According to the probation officer’s report, the victim’s family called for a fairly lengthy sentence, emphasizing the need for justice,” ODPP reported.
The court will consider the prosecution’s and give a verdict to the six individuals on June 21, 2024. As per the Penal Code, someone found guilty of murder could face a death penalty.
Kenya has been transitioning from retributive justice to restorative justice, leading to many death penalties being changed to life imprisonment.
