Six suspects have been arrested in connection to an incident where Lucy Wambui Jennings – a rancher in Laikipia – was ambushed and shot.
During the Sunday, January 21 incident, Wambui had left her home in Thome Location to attend a church service in Rumuruti town when she was way-laid by the assailants and shot at.
Confirming the arrests, Laikipia West Sub-County Police Commander Benjamin Muhia says police are still trailing more suspects.
Muhia says that police officers recovered at least 12 spent cartridges at the scene of the shooting, and are working to recover the weapon used.
What happened?
During the attack, the 50-year-old rancher was shot at the back of her head and her arm and left for dead.
Fortunately, her friends managed to rescue and rushed her to Rumuruti Sub County Hospital and later refereed to Pope Benedict XVI Hospital in Nyahururu where she is admitted.
Not the first time…
According to Rumuruti Business Community Chairman Fredrick Thairu, this was not the first time the rancher has been targeted by criminals.
He regretted that the expansive Jennings Farm located several kilometres away from Rumuruti town had been invaded by illegal grazers who have also built shanties in it.
Security officers in Laikipia West are in pursuit of illegal grazers believed to be behind the shooting of the rancher.
Residents want security to be enhanced in areas where such conflicts between illegal grazers and landowners are rampant.
