Slain JKUAT student Rita Waeni laid to rest

The family of slain JKUAT student Rita Waeni has announced that she has been laid to rest at Mukimwani Village, in Makueni County.

In a statement, the family disclosed that Rita’s body was laid to rest on Monday February 5, 2024 in a private ceremony. 

“Following the brutal murder of Rita Waeni Muendo on January 14, 2024, her body was handed over to the family by DCI on February 2, 2024, after conducting the requisite forensic analysis.

“This morning, February 5, 2024, Waeni’s body was laid to rest at a private ceremony attended only by her family ,” the family noted in a statement.

The funeral service and burial took place at her parents’ home at Mukimwani Village, Kalimani Location, Kisau Division, Makueni County.

The family is now appealing to the government to carry out thorough investigations to ensure justice for Rita Waeni.

“We know that many people have understood the depth of this loss and therefore decision for privacy at this event.

“We call upon the government to carry out thorough investigations, so that justice for Waeni may prevail,” the family stated.

At the same time, the family appreciated the friends, extended family and Kenyans in general for the support, prayers and love during the painful period.

“Throughout this painful period, we have also received kind wishes from people all over Kenya and beyond – who have reached out and prayed for our family, even when they did not know us. We are eternally grateful for the kindness shown to us.”

Meanwhile, police on January 22, 2024 arrested two Nigerian nationals in connection to Rita Waeni murder.

The two were arrested in Ndenderu, Kiambu County as a hatchet, butcher knife and 6 mobile phones were recovered from their residence.

According to the police report, the two Nigerians, William Oyie Opia and Johnbull Asibor were arrested while in possession of items linking them to the murder and other criminal activities.
